What’s on in Pembrokeshire: September 2015

Whether you are hungry, feeling arty, or looking to witness some of the greatest athletes that Wales has to offer, September in Pembrokeshire is a special time for you.

With so many great holiday cottage choices in Tenby, Saundersfoot and across the county, the beginning of autumn is a perfect time to visit and enjoy the region. Here are some great events to take note of this month: 

The Narberth Food Festival

The event is known for its friendliness. A community undertaking run entirely by volunteers, it welcomes some of the biggest chefs in Wales. The event is led by Angela Gray and Elizabeth Luard – local patrons who offer live talks and demonstrations. There are kids’ programs, local business participation, and live music. The event takes place on 26th and 27th September.

This year’s festival features the cooking of Gray, Anand George and Ludovic Dieumegard. They cook up delights from North Africa and the Middle East, as well as Persian and Indian Food. There will be a special focus on pairing drinks. George, who comes from the Purple Poppadom in Cardiff, leads the event on Sunday. The Kerala-born chef has worked in top restaurants in Mumbai and London before redefining Indian cuisine at his Welsh restaurants. 

Tenby Arts Festival

Now in its 24th year, the Tenby Arts Festival promises stimulating live entertainment. This year, under the direction of Grant Llewellyn, there will be a gathering of the best local choral groups into a massive choir. There will be performances from Costas Fotopoulos, as well as Emma Abbate and Julian Perkins.

Local products, the Tenby Male Choir will offer a special festival concert. For music enthusiasts, there will also be discussion about classical and jazz music, drama, and art. There will be workshops to enjoy as well. For more information, see the festival website. 

September Sport in Pembrokeshire

With the cooler temperatures also come some of the world’s best athletes. IRONMAN Wales takes place from Tenby and across Pembrokeshire on 13th September. Competitors will take part in the gruelling test of endurance over a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and finally a 26.2-mile marathon. The swim, much of the run, and the finish line are all in Tenby.

A scenic, low-key event, the Pembrokeshire Half Marathon and 10K road races will take place on 27th September. The race is along local roads and circles Dale village before heading to St. Ann's Head. For a bit of pizzazz, there is also a “Colour Run” on the Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire being held on 26th September. It is a 5K run where participants get showered with different colours of powder paint by spectators.
