Paws up for Pembrokeshire!

Don’t be put off bringing your dog to Pembrokeshire thinking that it will restrict your movements on your holiday.  Here is a listing of beaches, attractions, and places to eat and drink which will welcome you and your dog with open arms.

Beaches:

Barafundle: Voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world – it’s well worth a visit.  Dogs must be kept on a lead as there are cliffs and livestock in neighbouring fields.  Take water along too for your dog as this beach is quite a trek with no facilities.

Caldey Island: Access to Caldey Island home of the Cistercian monks is by boat from either Tenby Harbour or Castle Beach depending on the tides. The crossing is 20 minutes and boats run every 30 minutes. Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome on the ferry boat and should be kept on a lead whilst walking around the island.

Penally Beach: An extension of Tenby South Beach, Penally is sand and shingle backed by dunes.  Penally is very popular with dog walkers, especially in the summer when dog restrictions are in force on Tenby beaches. There is ample space for dogs to run, swim and dig.

Glen Beach: Located on the Western side of Saundersfoot, Glen Beach is accessed via the Harbour or through the Glen Woods. It’s mostly sand with small streams and rockpools and backed by cliffs. Plenty of space for your dog to enjoy some off-lead exercise and at low tide it’s possible to walk to Monkstone Point.

Attractions:

Bosherston Lily Ponds – Pathway trails take you around the ponds which are great to walk around whatever the season, although the lilies bloom in June. Keep your eyes open for those otters!  Dogs must be kept on the lead.

Carew Castle & Tidal Mill – Dogs allowed to walk around the castle and in the surrounding fields, although please keep your dog on a lead as there are sheep.

Colby Woodland Gardens – From Amroth beach there is a lovely walk (2.5 miles) through the woods up through the meadows and onto Colby Lodge.  Dogs must be kept on a lead.

Heatherton World of Adventure: The Sports Park is a dog-friendly attraction. All dogs must be kept on a lead always and are not permitted in the main reception or restaurant facilities. Water is provided for dogs outside of main reception.

Pembroke Castle:  A castle full to the brim with exciting historical facts. In addition, there is family fun activities such as Knight School, Dragon Days, Falconry Displays, Circus Workshops, and Living History Days. Dogs are allowed in the grounds of the castle; however, they must be kept on a short lead and cannot go into the shop or café.  There are lots of tables & chairs outside to sit with your dog to enjoy a self-prepared picnic or food purchased at the café.

Eat & Drink:

Hope & Anchor, Tenby: A busy family pub on the way down to the harbour with a front facing beer garden where you can watch the world go by whilst enjoying your meal.

The Normandie, Tenby: Upper Frog Street, within the town walls allows dogs in their bottom bar as well as their beer garden and offers a wide variety of food on the menu.

The Buccaneer, Tenby: This pub will allow dogs in the beer garden only, they have a covered area for poor weather and offer good-value food just in the town square.

The Freshwater Inn, Freshwater East: Well behaved dogs are allowed in the bar area making it perfect for all those enjoying a good walk along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path which passes right by their front door.

The Carew Inn, Carew: Dogs allowed in the small back bar, covered marquee, and beer garden. Food served lunch and evening in all above-mentioned dog friendly areas.

The Swan, Little Haven: Stylish pub where dogs are welcome in the bar - stunning food in a wonderful location perfect for a lazy afternoon after a walk on the beach.

The Old Chemist Inn, Saundersfoot: Dogs are invited into the small but intimate bar and during quite times the lounge area. A traditional pub offering reasonably priced home-made pub grub, real ales, friendly people and an open fire in winter.

Wisemans Bridge Inn, Wisemans Bridge: Dogs allowed in public bar areas and outside. Benches almost on the beach with great sea views. Food pub fayre. Great place to be on sunny day. Very popular.
