Welsh councils combine to safeguard the Gower Peninsula
Three councils in South West Wales have combined to safeguard the beauty of the Gower Peninsula, ensuring that it keeps its breathtaking views for holidaymakers and locals to enjoy for years to come. Many had been worried that Gower, home to renowned beauty spots such as Rhossili Bay, could become a quarrying source for the nearby city of Swansea, with the council requiring a minimum 10-year supply of crushed rock to meet national requirements. The rock would be used primarily for road maintenance.

A large group of Humboldt penguins are bedding into their new surroundings – a £500,000 enclosure complete with a nursery, beach, saltwater pool and play area with plants and rocks – at Folly Farm, near Kilgetty, and visitors will be able to see them within the next few months.

The total worth of one of Pembrokeshire’s and Wales’ leading natural attractions has been laid bare in figures released last month. The Wales Coastal Path, which runs through Pembrokeshire, attracted 102,000 visitors last year to the county and nearly three million visitors to Wales according to Cardiff University research. The path, which stretches 870 miles from the River Dee in Flintshire in the north to Chepstow in the south, provides 'a real economic boost to coastal towns in Wales' according to Environment Minister John Griffiths.

The new map is the first such map for over half a century, with the last detailed rights of way map produced in the 1960's. The project was funded by the Welsh Government, with the final map taking four years to produce.
